Hola Reader
Are you looking for fresh, engaging ways to immerse your students in Spanish culture?
In my latest video, I take my dance students behind the scenes of Carmen Fantasy, a flamenco dance inspired by Bizet’s opera.
Beyond just a dance, this piece is a gateway into Spain’s rich traditions—Seville as the setting, bullfighting, gypsy history, and flamenco culture. It’s a dynamic springboard to spark curiosity and bring learning to life.
Here's sharing 5 exciting ideas you could explore with your students:
🎭 1. Spanish Dance Workshop – Give students an immersive experience in Spanish dance, where they learn movement, rhythm, and expression firsthand.
📅 2. A Deeper Experience – Consider a series of workshops, allowing students to build confidence and truly absorb the dance, rather than a one-off session. (Personally, I think this is better)
🎤3. Showcase Their Learning – I'm usually engaged to perform with my dancers for schools, which is great. But thinking for the students, why not create a performance project where students work towards a showcase, perhaps for a Cultural Appreciation or International Day? I can guide them from studio to stage, helping them experience the artistic process in a hands-on way.
📖 4. Study Guide on Carmen & Spain – I was a Spanish language and literature student myself (in my University days). The Spanish culture was what made language learning fun! So for Spanish language learners, you could delve into the world of Carmen—exploring Seville as the setting, gypsy history, flamenco culture & songs (the stories are literature!) as part of a cultural study project.
🎨 5. Career Insights for Older Students – As a Flamenco Producer and Cultural Curator (featured on Channel News Asia), I can share insights into arts careers—what it means to be a producer, how creative projects come to life, and how the performing arts can be a career path.
Would you be interested in bringing any of these ideas into your classroom? I’d love to explore how we can tailor an experience for your students! Feel free to have a quick chat to discuss possibilities.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Spanish Music Inspiration
Choosing music for dance is not easy. There are many renditions played by different musicians, and instrumentation (from piano to orchestra, from guitar to harp).
Here's the one I liked best, with violinist Hilary Hahn's dynamics.
Listen to it and let me know what you liked about it!
Spanish social & community events
Dance + Culture + Spain
I find that experiential learning is important for students (whether dancers or language learners). When we learn with fun, we create POSITIVE memories.
So I'm kickstarting this series of social & community-building events that bring participants together not just with dance, but also with conversations centred on a common interest - Spain & Spanish culture!
If you'd like to find out more, you can join this Sunday.
Dates: This Sunday, 23 February
Time: 6.30pm - 7.30pm
Where: Crane Club, in the cool Joo Chiat 'hood, followed by social drinks and conversations about Spain!
